Traditionally, a federal holiday is meant to celebrate important dates in US history. Martin Luther King Jr. Day and Veterans Day are important dates because they honor the birth of a civil rights leader and the end of WWI. Thanksgiving is the day we celebrate the coming Fall harvest. Independence Day celebrates the signing of the Declaration of Independence. Why, then, is Halloween not a part of our current list of holidays? Millions of Americans celebrate Halloween every year. It's a time when people of varied beliefs and origins come together to celebrate the lives of all that have passed before them. In the past century, it has become a celebration not of only death, but of life. For this reason we the people of the United States petition to have Halloween declared a federal holiday.
