Heavy metal must be America's official genre. It's a sound that goes beyond just being a style of music. I can think of no other genre that is as rich with diversity, complexity, and raw emotion. But it's something more than just palm muted sixteenth notes and double bass drums, the music itself has created a philosophy. Metal is all about individualism, self determination, and going against the herd. Anyone who has ever been made an outsider can find a release in the music and a welcoming group in the fans. Whatever the sub-genre, I can think of no other type of music that means so much to its fans. They aren't just songs that we're listening to, they're anthems that remind us we aren't alone, and it's okay to be different. This is why heavy metal should be our official genre of music.
