Many parents take much of the housework upon themselves so as to let their kids focus on grades and consequently let them go on in life not knowing how to use things such as a plunger, washing machine, or fuse box, or knowing how pay taxes and bills and properly answer a phone.
Knowing basic cooking and home skills is just as important as knowing how to play a tuba or wrestle, and unlike many electives, students would continue to use these skills for the rest of their lives. Many youths proceed to go to college or get married not knowing how to properly feed or care for themselves or their family, and many would benefit from the equal opportunity to learn.
Making Home Economics an elective choice for kids across the nation would not only help the nation's youth, but also create jobs.
