make illegal the harmful method of retrieving natural gas called fracking

Created by W.D. on November 17, 2012

Hydraulic fracturing, or fracking, is a method of retrieving natural gas from the Earth. It entails drilling ten thousand feet into the ground and almost as far horizontally. It also entails putting a mixture of millions of gallons of water and hundreds of toxic chemicals into this hole. After this "fracking fluid" is used, it goes into a hole in the ground lined with a plastic tarp. These have been known to leak, polluting groundwater and waterways. Also, some of these chemicals can become airborne. According to a study done at the University of Colorado, a high level of benzene (a known cause of cancer) has been found near fracking operations. This danger to public health cannot continue.
