Getting hit with an unexpected tax bill can devastate American families, and the government has the responsibility and vested interest to ensure that paying that bill is easy and economical. The federal government should contract with a third party to accept free credit/debit card payments so debtors don't have to pay an additional fee in order to make a payment, regardless of the fact that the government itself doesn't receive the fee. Furthermore, the federal government should streamline direct deduction payments, as right now Americans must register for EFTPS and then wait a full week to be mailed information to be able to submit a payment. This is time consuming and overly cumbersome in the digital age. The government is well served by making payments easier and cheaper to make.
