A common practice amongst technology companies such as Apple, Google, Microsoft, Symantec, etc., is to ban employees from developing products on their own time using their own personal resources. Because of this, employees who have an innovative idea that does not fit in with their companies' goals but falls under a highly broad definition of a competitive product are prevented from producing innovative solutions without first leaving their secure job for a potentially insecure endeavor. Such employees, therefore, may never be emboldened to be the next great American innovator and employer. In a related manner, these companies also require new employees grant them free use of any patents they developed elsewhere with no financial compensation.
