Today, it is still legal in most states for health insurance contracts to allow the exclusion of benefits for "morbid obesity" and "bariatric surgery" regardless of numerous published findings that concludes weight loss surgery as being a very effective tool to diminish or abolish most comorbidities that are commonly found in people who are morbidly obese.
Left untreated, people who are severely obese stand a much higher risk of premature death. Most will develop serious conditions such as: diabetes, heart disease, and stroke.
Health insurance should not be permitted to exclude treatment for the morbidly obese. To do so is not only immoral, it's discriminating.
Regardless of it's cause, morbid obesity should be covered by all health insurance, just as addiction treatment is now mandatory
