The act of attempting to influence decisions made by officials in the government -- legislators or members of regulatory agencies -- has a major impact on public policy and therefore effects all citizens. It is critical that those who participate in this activity have a heartfelt belief in the cause for which they are fighting and are not simply attempting to earn a paycheck. It is known that being a private sector lobbyist can be an extremely lucrative occupation and that many former members of congress and former regulators have moved into lobbying positions at private firms significantly increasing their income. This effects how legislators represent their constituents as they know if they are not reelected they have a lobbying job waiting for them.
