Do you believe that women can be heads of state?
I want proof because we still operate under the assumption that women cannot be the heads of their own families.
Why?

Things like this should not happen in the Unites States.
If we take action on a federal level, people may still choose to follow old tradition, but this will send the message that not only that women are equal to men, but that men may be equal to women if they so choose to be.
This could be the beginning of an important cultural shift
This can also apply to LGBT couples. It's why I chose the word "spouse" in the title.
The People have legitimate grounds for doubting your dedication to equality if you refuse.
