It seems like the poor in this country are getting a bum rap. Because of rampant commercialism and greed what is supposed to be a holiday to be spent relaxing and with family is quickly becoming “just another work day” for those unfortunate enough to have to work low-wage retail jobs.
One of two things needs to happen: First, all employees must get mandatory over-time if they work holidays recognized by the state or federal government. Or second, and more preferably, nationally and/or state recognized holidays should require time off with pay.
I am writing this on Thanksgiving day. I say we all observe this terrible example being displayed by major retailers, sign this petition, and vow to do what we can to ensure that people are treated fairly.
