Simply put: money is not speech and, until Texas executes one, corporations are not people. The Supreme Court decision, Citizens United vs. Federal Election Commission, was a poor and terrible decision on the part of our courts. Our democracy exists through a system of shared power, of balance between the elite and the regular citizen, the higher and lower classes, which check each other to move the country through compromise and mutual benefit. Money, under the guiding principle of capitalism, disturbed and destroys this system of checks and balances, because unlike democracy, money tends to concentrate around a small group of people. The president has voiced opposition to Citizen United. We wish for him to carry through with his views and make strong efforts to reverse Citizens United.
