The 40th anniversary of the deaths of three civil rights workers in Mississippi is coming June 21 of this year. They received a death sentence for trying to register voters in the South. Every time I, and doubtless many others, read about the atrocity committed near Philadelphia, MS in 1964, I have to fight back anger and horror, and feel compelled to heal this pain. A day to commemorate this simplest act of democracy seems an eloquent and elegant way to honor Messrs. Chaney, Goodman, and Schwerner, among the many others who made the ultimate sacrifice for universal civil rights.
