America is still divided along race lines. The recent tragedy of the shooting in the historically Black church in Charleston, South Carolina has been the epicenter of current discussion–or lack thereof–as biased news outlets ignore one of the causes of this event: racism in America.
Though the lives lost are those that cannot be brought back, nor should they be used in the context of promoting an agenda, I believe that the White House can best honor these innocent lives by uniting the People and by introducing this holiday into the Federal calendar.
On June 19th, 1865, General Order No. 3 was announced in Galveston, Texas, which is where this Holiday roots from. It is time to reintroduce the history that was lost during the racial divide of slavery and segregation.
