June 19th 2015 was the 150th anniversary of Juneteenth--commemorating the emancipation of all slaves in the United States. Even before the tragic assault on the Charleston Emanuel AME church, this holiday was long overdue for official recognition. Now, in the aftermath of that hateful and ignorant terrorism, it would be an incredible show of resilience, solidarity, and a poignant way to honor to those who lost their lives to declare Juneteenth a federal holiday. A Juneteenth federal holiday would demonstrate that we the people are only more committed to honoring all citizens of this nation, and celebrating our movement away from that barbaric time in our history. The time is now--declare Juneteenth a federal holiday
