Many pet stores (petco,petsmart,etc) abuse hermit crabs! They give them very little if any sand or eco earth. Hermit crabs MUST be able to dig. Also only 2-3 should be put into 10gallon tanks. Pet stores usually put anywhere from 10-50 in 10 gallons or even smaller! This is abusive! They also need moist air (humid air) to breathe. Most tanks in petstores have normal humidity! Thats abusive! Hermit crab distributors taken THOUSANDS of them, put all of them in a dirty room with wood floors, no water food or sand and crack there shells open! Hermit crabs shed limbs when stressed and floors are covered in limbs. Painted shells also kill hermit crabs. Even if the paint is non toxic to us, hermit crabs are much smaller and have less tolerance to things like that. Watch PETA or just goto petco.
