The debate of whether or not Long Island should be its own state has been on going. With a huge tax base and its ability to be self sufficient Long Island should be reconsidered as the 51st state. In the wake of hurricane sandy it is apparent that federal aid given to the state of New York has been squandered by the city. With a huge military background and its own major airports and shipping facilities making Long Island its own state would not only benefit the people of the island. It would keep the tax dollars where the people who pay them need them.
