Every year millions of women give birth in America, and irregardless of color some women will test positive for Strep B which is a harmful bacteria that grows sometimes in the rectum or small intestines of women and when it encounters a newborn can cause meningitis which is an infection of the covering of the brain. Children who survuve this horrible illness are usually deaf and suffer seizures or can have multiple strokes and have cortical blindness, cerebral palsy, autism, and become retarded. The steps in place now in America are a routine test done at 36 weeks to determine if the bacteria is present and then if it is they administer an antibiotic during delivery to kill the bacteria. Unfortunately there is something called late onset STREP B meningitis where the child still gets sick.
