Make National Coaches Day (October 6) a federally recognized annual holiday

Created by G.C. on October 01, 2014

We petition the Obama administration to recognize National Coaches Day (October 6th) as a permanent, annual day of celebration in America.

The precedent for our request comes from presidential Proclamation 4157. This proclamation, issued by President Nixon on September 19, 1972, established October 6, 1972 as National Coaches Day. According to the words of Nixon, this holiday was created to give coaches around the country "the recognition and honor which they so richly deserve, for they represent the finest elements in the American character."

We are speaking on behalf of the 2.5 million American men and women who volunteer their time every year to serve as amateur and youth sports coaches. Please help us establish October 6th as the official National Coaches Day.
