Currently, FGM (female genital mutilation) is specifically made illegal under US law.
However, MGM (male genital mutilation, aka circumcision) is routinely practiced in the US despite lacking a medical or scientific basis (excluding medical procedures for medical problems/therapeutic circumcision).
Other practices, like piercing the earlobes, are also legal.
I believe this represents a major problem with the law, and a lack of public discourse on the issue, the law protects women, while excluding men from those same protections against routine, non-therapeutic genital mutilation, and fails to protect children from other traumatic and unnecessary body modifications.
The current law should be extended to protect minors from any non-therapeutic body modification.
