Make the $1 dollar coin Octagonal and at least 35 mm in diameter. Stop making $1 dollar bills and collect the old ones as they get used, then people will use the $1 dollar coin. Start making all coins different shapes and size difference enough to easily tell them apart. Make bills of different sizes also so blind people don't get ripped off!
Get rid of the penny also.
