'Stopping the boats' was an immoral, illegal election promise. We call for international pressure against our Australian approach to refugees.
Screening for danger can be done without torturing the innocent. Deciding who may settle here need not involve sending the vulnerable into unspeakable conditions for years of uncertainty. We must be fair, not cruel.
The challenges of intake will only provide jobs for Australian social workers, language teachers, and counsellors.
Call on us to give people enough dignity to decide whether to endanger their lives to escape other horrors. Instead of persecuting them we (along with other nations) must help more people not to have to do that in the first place, seeking them for migration and offering education and support when they do arrive.
