There are many required courses in public schools, but the lack of philosophy courses makes for an uneducated public without an understanding of things like political theory, and allows us to be manipulated through an education system that hinges on indoctrination.
These classes would also, obviously, teach tolerance of different religions and political ideologies.
Also, we're all tired of the creationism/evolution debate, but a philosophy course is an appropriate place for it, while science classes can focus on science.
