Make Post Offices into Internet Service Providers and connect them with a Publicly-owned Fiber Backbone

The locations of existing post offices are a perfect match for a fiber optic, high-speed computer network topology. By connecting post offices with a fiber backbone, high-speed internet can be provided even in rural areas without having to further invest in buildings or property. This would entail many temporary and permanent jobs for construction, maintenance, and operation. The USPS could increase revenues by providing Internet service and evolve their constitutional role into the 21st century. Public ownership of this system would be a tremendous national asset and would ensure reliable and resilient communication in the event of an emergency.
