Horrifically, Burundi is on the brink of genocide.
US Ambassador to the UN Samantha Power wrote on 11/5: "We are deeply concerned by President Nkurunziza’s...pledge to use violent methods to have security forces search homes for weapons and opposition figures within five days...Whether in Kirundi or English, this language is terrifying...'you have to pulverize, you have to exterminate—these people are only good for dying.'"
Burundi is beautiful. Conflict there is not a reality; it is a fate that the country and international community can change. We request that President Obama make the moral choice: condemn recent events, support Ambassador Power, and make preventing genocide an urgent diplomatic priority.
We know where this goes. Rwanda is next door. Will we let another 1994 happen?
