make a public statement expressing his personal desire to see the Washington Redskins change its name in the next year.

The name "Redskins" is outdated and unkind. That it is the name of the National Football League's Washington franchise is inappropriate. The capital of the nation that has championed civil rights and equality like no other in history should not have such an offensive name. It is an odd carryover from the past. There are plenty of alternatives available. The Washington Football Club; The Washington Braves; The Washington Potomacs are a few that frequently come up. The team's owner will never change the name unless there is enough public pressure and shaming to do so. While the President has no official voice in the matter, his personal opinion--publicly stated--would add tremendous gravitas and bring urgent attention to the matter.
