In October 2012, the Librarian of Congress explicitly removed DMCA exceptions for rooting/jailbreaking tablets even though such exceptions were intentionally left for phones (rooting, not unlocking).
The result is requiring case-by-case exceptions through expensive court proceedings. This impedes fair use for consumers.
A tablet is a small computer. There are valid reasons to need to be able to legally root/jailbreak a tablet. For instance, among others things, engineers sometimes diagnose networking problems in their apps by using legal apps that require rooting. Among other consumer uses, consumers need to jailbreak for completely legal themes, remote desktop and terminal services.
We ask that the White House ask the Librarian of Congress to rescind this decision, or champion a bill.
