Sally Hemmings was the mistress of our 3rd President of the U.S.A. during his terms and, according to some records, even slept in the white house alongside him. She was an African-American slave that President Jefferson discreetly bestowed her freedom after having slept with her at 16 yrs old during his Ambassadorship to France, just prior to his Presidency. It is highly documented that they had several children together and even though she was a free woman, she voluntarily and out of love, stood by the widowed President until his death, possibly even raped. It is my notion that they had a common law marriage after living together for over 20 years.
