Over the three month period kids get off in the summer they lose even the most basic education. And when they come back to school, they spend the first few months trying to relearn what they have already learned the previous year. If we make the school year longer then kids have a longer period of time to learn something and teachers can repeatedly repeat teach something throughout the year without taking up extra lesson time for the stuff they should be learning that year.
And to make it easier on a student who possibly has a job or some other, we can cut the time spent in school studying by an hour or two.
