On September 17th in 1829 Joseph A. Norton, an eccentric man living in a flophouse in the San Francisco Bay Area, wrote in to the local paper and decalred himself Emporer of The United States and Protector of Mexico. Let's celebrate our county's first and only Emporer on this day. To me this shows the spirit of our country where you can be anything you want to be. Even if it's just all in your head and your community just plays along to amuse you.
