While playing with my sixteen-month-old on a public playground at a local park, a woman walked past us across the playground smoking a cigarette. I have tried very hard to keep my son away from second-hand smoke. I realize that the playground is a public area; however, children are there. People should have respect for others and for other children and not smoke around them. I believe public playgrounds should have designated smoking areas away from the play area or make it illegal to smoke within so many feet of the public playground and/or park. They already stopped smoking inside restaurants and on hospital grounds. I believe it is time to protect our children. People who do not abide by this should have to pay fines or face jail time or both.
