The top 4 categories of spending for the federal government are the following in order of magnitude: 1) Health and Human Services (Medicare / Medicaid / Unemployment), 2) Social Security, 3) Department of Defense, 4) Interest on the federal debt. The federal government spends almost twice as much as it takes in. This is not because it does not tax enough as it brings in almost $2 trillion per year which is 15% of GDP. There are marginal additional revenues that can and should be brought in by tax reform, however the vast majority of reform should be on government spending which needs to be greatly reduced over the following 10 - 15 years. The President needs to make this his #1 priority in his second term to properly establish his legacy for future generations of Americans. Compromise.
