The Supplemental Security Income (SSI) program serves as an income source of last resort for elderly or disabled individuals. SSI is not a "handout," it gives modest purchasing power and just enough to pay the rent for disabled citizens.
Currently, SSI discriminates against persons who wish to marry their beloved. Benefits for a married couple, both of whom receive SSI, amount to 25 percent less than the total they would receive if they were living together but not as husband and wife. This penalizes those who would like to marry.
