A World Heritage Site is s a place (such as a forest, mountain, lake, island, desert, monument, building, complex, or city) that is listed by the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) as of special cultural or physical significance. They may provide sanctuary for endangered species, such as the mountain gorilla or offer unique habitat. World Heritage Sites may be cultural, natural, or mixed. The term "World Heritage" means the site offers features of importance to humanity.
World Heritage sites may have abundant natural resources. Oil and mining companies are moving into World Heritage Sites to take advantage of those resources. Petition President Obama to make a statement on the value of World Heritage Sites, referencing the Virunga National Park.
