Every newly constructed school, church or community building in recognized tornado/sever storm areas should be mandated to contain a shelter/safe room capable of withstanding the most severe F5 tornado with winds up to 320 miles per hour. This shelter or series of shelters should be large enough to safely support the full intended occupancy of the building.
Obviously, retrofitting existing structures would prove to be enormously expensive and often impractical. However, new public buildings are being designed and built as this is being read. This petition asks the Administration to consider lives this straightforward and relatively economical building code would save.
