Too many Americans are burdened by overwhelming student loan debts.
In extreme cases it should be possible to discharge student loans when there is no real possibility of ever repaying them.
In the case of poverty, a person should be able to discharge student loans as an ordinary part of bankruptcy. Student loans are often the largest debt a person has, and there is no justifiable reason for such debts being exempt from bankruptcy.
In the case of permanent/total disability it take years, thousands of dollars, and massive emotional and mental effort to go through the Social Security disability certification process, only to find student loans use different disability criteria. Student loans should be automatically discharged if a person is found permanently and totally disabled by SSA.
