If a family member passes away, it is not always possible to know what policies they may have had through their work, banking, or on their own. Many policies are never paid out because family is not aware of them and a claim is never made. Insurance companies should be required to make these records available through a centralized independent database so that after completing the proper paperwork, the family is able to do a search for any policies that may be in effect. Individuals should also be able to do a search on themselves to verify their own policies at any time or to see if anyone is holding a policy on them (I would want to know and should have that right).
