Diastasis recti (DR), or abdominal separation, occurs in thousands of American women each year, and hundreds of men. This condition is downplayed on many healthcare websites and the surgery to repair it is currently considered cosmetic unless the woman in question is in the armed forces and insured by Tricare.
It would seem that the DOD's health care system understands that DR inhibits job performance, but the private sector turns a blind eye. DR can in fact cause serious back and pelvic girdle pain, throw off balance, leave the sufferer's intestines unprotected in the case of any kind of impact to the stomach, cause urinary incontinence, be disfiguring and a source of emotional anguish and make the person more prone to have a hernia.
This condition should be covered. It's not cosmetic.
