USS Tarawa (LHA-1) was the first ship of her class. She was commissioned in 1976 and decommissioned in 2009. She is currently in reserve in Hawaii. A group of Tarawa veterans is working to make the Tarawa a floating museum in Fairview, Oregon (like the Midway Museum in San Diego, California, and the Iowa Museum in San Pedro, California.) U.S. Navy veterans believe that these floating museums serve a valuable educational and historical purpose.
