Mandate that all airline seats be designed to ergonomically accommodate an American male in the 5-95th percentile.

Created by N.B. on September 02, 2014

For years, airlines have crowded people into airplanes with little regard to the personal comfort and space of passengers. This lack of personal space and other options such as reclining seats create a stressful and dangerous environment for travelers, as recent news stories about fights involving reclining seats have shown. But, the reclining seat is only a small part of the problem. The main problem is the small dimensions of airplane seats. I propose that the government mandates that all airline seats ergonomically conform to the 5-95th percentile of American males. This would mean a thigh length of 26 inches, width of 24-1/2, and a seat back height of 27-1/2. With these seat dimensions, most people would be able to travel comfortably, which would result in less stress and hardship.
