On January 2nd, 2013, Rep. Kyrsten Sinema was the first congressperson to swear her oath on the very document she is serving to protect, the United States Constitution. It has been a long tradition, broken only by President James Madison, for elected officials to swear their oaths with a Christian Bible. Contrary to belief, we are not a Christian nation. Nor are we a Catholic, Jewish, or Muslim nation. We are all of those and none at the same time.
I ask President Obama to uphold the principle of "the separation of church and state" in our country - an ideal heralded, but never implemented throughout our nation's history. Beginning an elected term with the first action in the name of a religious text sets a concerning precedence for the years that follow and needs to officially end.
