According to the CPSC, one child dies every 2 weeks when a television, piece of furniture or an appliance falls on them. It is estimated that 71 children per day or 25,400 per year are injured from an unsecured piece of furniture or TV falling on them.
These injuries and deaths are easily preventable with a low cost anchoring device to secure the piece of furniture, television or appliance to the wall. The problem is that most parents are unaware of the danger or unaware of how to prevent it from happening. There are voluntary standards, but no mandatory furniture and TV safety standards.
Requiring warning labels and an appropriate anchoring device to support the weight of and to secure the TV, furniture or appliance to the wall would educate the consumer and save lives.
