Mandate that all politicians at every level of government swap salaries and benefits with low/middle income constituents

Created by C.J. on November 30, 2012

The current salary (2011-2012) for rank-and-file members of the House and Senate is $174,000 per year, with Congressional leadership earning even higher salaries. A cost-of-living-adjustment (COLA) increase takes effect annually unless Congress votes to not accept it. The President earns $400,000 per year. The median household income in the United States is $46,326. Dual earner households have a higher median income at $67,348. This means that on average each member of Congress earns as much as 4 or more of their constituents. All politicians should be required to swap their salaries and benefits with that of a randomly selected constituent for a period of one year. This will teach the government leaders how their decisions affect the average citizen.
