9v batteries are the most common battery used in smoke detectors. They are many times more expensive than AA or AAA batteries which means that many American's on tight budgets may neglect to change the batteries in their smoke detectors as often as they should.
Mandating that all smoke detectors operate on AA or AAA batteries will increase the safety of many American households that may otherwise not replace the batteries when fresh batteries are needed.
