The National Commission on Vision and Health states that 25% of children under 17 years old, have a vision problem. Vision problems such as strabismus, amblyopia, and refractive errors contribute to lower school performance in school. Those student who fail the vision screening, about half do not seek professional help in terms of eye care. Unfortunately, vision screenings are not standardized and the results of such exams are not adequate in detecting most eye problems. Comprehensive eye health evaluations by an optometrist or ophthalmologist have been shown to be most effective. With the decline of United States in aptitude tests as compared to other countries, this proposal should be the first line of treatment for improving our school system.
