Auto manufacturers should adopt common parts interfaces and be mandated to build to those specifications. This will allow greater competition in the ecosystem of auto parts, longer vehicle life, and easier repairs and maintenance.
The country and world will be a better place. We will reduce the number of cars and auto parts disposed of in junkyards.Auto makers will not be "too big too fail", with less domino effect to part makers. We will see more innovative products that can be integrated into vehicles aftermarket that aren't being made available by auto makers. For example automakers could enable integration of different seating configurations (ie: bench seats, U shaped seats in box vehicles or vans), or enable integration of aftermarket electronics with steering wheel buttons.
