Within the last several years, businesses have been slowly chipping away at worker holidays. They've done this by moving Black Friday sales closer and closer to Thanksgiving. Sale times moved from 5am Friday to midnight, and from there have moved into Thanksgiving itself. Because of this, workers who want to spend this time of thanks with their families are instead faced with a terrible choice. Either they risk their jobs for their families or they cave to corporate greed and work.
Despite public outcry, few businesses have listened to the people. To that end, we the undersigned ask for the administration to take the following step. We ask that businesses whose operations are not essential for public health and safety be required to close for Thanksgiving.
