Mandate Electronic Safety Locks on Guns

Created by J.S. on March 28, 2013

We petition the Obama Administration - and Congress, if they feel like doing something this year - to mandate that all guns manufactured for sale to buyers not employed in law enforcement or the military in the United States have electronic safety locks by 2016.

We define an "electronic safety lock" as: an insulated electronic circuit within the weapon that replaces the existing safety mechanism within the majority of semiautomatic pistols and rifles.

Firing the weapon would the insertion of a small KEY, roughly the size of the end of a USB stick. Discharging the weapon without this key should be impossible. This should make theft and misuse of the weapon more difficult.

We ask for this in the hope that it might at least encourage more responsible behavior on the part of gun owners.
