Much speculation has gone into understanding why mass shootings happen. Factors such as poor mental health, significant stress, and bullying contribute to these shootings; however, the root cause (or causes) is unknown and certainly in dire needs of solving. In the space between now and the moment in which those causes are understood and ameliorated, it is necessary to censor the identities of the shooters from public newscasts. This petition does not seek to benefit the shooter. Rather, it attempts to discourage copycat shooters who may draw inspiration from a chance at national media coverage. By forcing the media to withhold the shooters' identities, any fantasy of glory becomes stripped away to the twisted reality inherent to mass shootings like Umpqua. Like Columbine. Like Sandy Hook.
