Currently most insurance companies will cover a colonoscopy as a preventative measure. However, if polyps are discovered and require biopsy, it is then considered "diagnostic".
Once the procedure is coded as diagnostic it involves high co-pays or denied claims.
If there are any symptoms or screenings that have been detected previously, the colonoscopy can also be considered diagnostic.
These facts are keeping many people from having the procedure done,because of money out of pocket involved.
Would it not make much more sense for the insurance companies to pay for advanced screening rather than cancer treatment costs, when it could have been caught in early stages, or prevented all together?
