Current federal legislation only mandates that employers, including federal employers, “provide a place, other than a bathroom, that is shielded from view and free from intrusion from co-workers and the public” for nursing mothers. Many mothers are forced to pump in unsanitary storerooms and janitors' closets.
The Office of Personnel Management guidance suggests that an exceptional workplace could provide such things as a sink, refrigerator, freezer, paper towels, and disinfecting cleaning supplies. These should be mandatory for large federal worksites.
It is bad enough that mothers are forced to return to work early because of maternity leave legislation. At least provide us with good conditions in which to pump and maintain breastfeeding for our children.
